Overall job purpose

Absa Group Limited are a diversified financial service provider, offering an integrated set of products and services across 12 countries. This role reports into a central group function known as the Converged Security Office. The Converged Security Office provides various security related services to the Absa Group of which one is Identity & Access Management.

The Absa Group Limited (AGL) Chief Security Office (CSO) is responsible for ensuring the effective and holistic management of the risks, threats and resiliency of cybersecurity, information security, fraud, physical security and resiliency across our Africa operations, leveraging best in class capabilities and processes, analytics, threat intelligence, tools, and subject matter expertise, protecting the Bank, its customers and its employees, as well as society at large, from the negative effects of cyber and physical crime and fraud.

The Chief Security Office function decides, implements and/or governs the implementation of the appropriate security frameworks and controls to meet the requirements of information and data protection, cybersecurity, people and building security, resiliency and anti-fraud laws and regulations.’

The overall purpose of the Chief of Staff (CoS) is to support to Chief Security Officer (CSO) in the strategic objectives of People and Culture,  these both being vital delivery streams in the CSO strategy where we are focusing on creating a thriving culture and opening up opportunities and new possibilities for our people.

The CoS role will form part of the Executive team and ensures alignment and consistency of the Chief Security Office’s people agenda across the continent.

Historically, this role was a combined role with the Chief Operating Officer / operational elements across the function, however due to the increased demand, intensity and focus required on our people, culture, transformation & talent agenda this is a newly created role, splitting out these responsibilities from the Chief Operating Officer role.

Key accountabilities

  • Act as key advisor to the CSO providing knowledgeable review and recommendations for intended people policy shifts, ensuring that context, analysis and the view of the respective areas are collated, filtered, and summarised in a concise manner

  • Attend a multitude of people, transformation and talent strategy forums and key management committees to stay up to date with people operational conditions and provide early warning to the CSO of any probable issues and proposed solutions

  • Ensure that any people policy or strategy decisions taken by the CSO are communicated to the correct audience in a timely manner and gauge the understanding and commitment from the wider CSO community

  • Periodically review the tactical plans put in place to deliver the people strategy as set out and ensure that continued focus in maintained on the key deliverables

  • Take personal accountability for resolving complaints and issues lodged directly with the CSO and reply on the CSO’s behalf or under his/her name

  • Advise the CSO on on-going people issues and related programmes to address these in the function and set up a process for monitoring likely defensive issues

  • Ensure consistency in statements or decisions in line with strategy & policy

  • Ensure that decision making within the function is devolved to the lowest appropriate level to support the functions objectives of empowering & growing the competence of the line decision makers

  • Interface with the CSO’s direct reports (ExCo & ManCo) on a regular basis to understanding the culture & environment and to assist them to prioritise their focus areas on their people agenda

  • Oversee the planning and execution of large events for the CSO office, such as town halls, results announcements etc.

  • Participate in the recruitment process for senior roles in the function, working closely with the People Business Partner

  • Work with the People function to coordinate the execution of performance and talent reviews for all business unit leads, ensuring that appropriate preparation is done prior to formal reviews with the CSO

  • Inform the CSO of potential problems that might arise in the function, i.e. disagreements between parties

  • Interact with other colleagues, CoS’ across Engineering Services (ES) to facilitate problem solving and to ensure ES wide interaction, integration and collaboration

  • Continually monitor the overall people effectiveness of the function, including detailed headcount, budgets and targets, and advise the CSO of any possible deviations and the actions that have been created by the ExCo to address these

  • Develop good working relationships with all areas of the bank, as well as external parties as necessary

  • Prepare the key themes, presentations and reviews for the CSO and assist with detailed content when required.  Ensure that presentations are packaged to reflect the functions brand and the CSO’s preferred style

  • In conjunction with the Executive Assistant, Screen requests for meetings or events to be attended by the CSO and determine which ones would be appropriate for personal attendance and which ones should be delegated to other leaders within the function

Role/Person specification

Education and experience required 

  • B-degree in Commerce, Business Administration, Banking

  • 3 years technical IT experience

  • 5 years managerial experience

  • Proven experience within various security disciplines and a solid understanding of the key principles

  • Project / programme management certification essential with proven experience in managing large scale, complex project

Preferred / Advantage

B-degree in Technology related subject (NQF level no. 6)
